How to Play Guitar - The Truth About Forming a Band

We learn by doing and the best way to learn guitar is to play in a band. There is only so much you can learn from a teacher or a book; the trick is to thoroughly apply and test your knowledge and skills before adding new information.

What better way to accelerate your guitar playing than forming your own group or joining an existing one?

Since most players frequently end up in a group without too much thought about how they got there or where they are going I thought it might be a good idea to present some of the musical 'facts of life' about forming or participating in a band.

Problem #1 - The band practices endlessly but never seems to be going anywhere

Solution - Start with clear expectations. Before you commit to a musical group ask questions: find out (a) what style of music the band plays or intends to play, (b) what are the band's goals, i.e., to perform live, record a demo, go on tour (c) what are the time frames for each goal?

Don't be afraid to ask questions it will ultimately save you a lot of wasted time and money and aggravation?

Problem #2 - Certain band members are always missing band practice

Solution - Be brutally honest, because the group is only as good as it's weakest member ask yourself... is player 'X' in this group because they are a dedicated musician committed to the group's goals or are they in the band by default because the group needed a bass player and 'X' was the only person they knew; so the group members convinced 'X' to learn to play bass?

I mentioned earlier that a band is only as good as it's weakest member; the trick is to make certain the weakest member is never you; keep your eye out for the weakest member and notice if there is any sign of improvement over a four week period, if not... move on!

By constantly working on your musical skills you keep your options open and pull opportunities towards you.

Problem #3 - Personality clashes

Solution - No band can function when the members are not working in harmony. Regardless of how talented a player is, if you cannot get along with them on a personal level, musically you won't work either. You have to be friends first before the music will work; top musicians care about and support each other... if that's not happening... leave!

Problem #4 - Disputes over who owns equipment etc.

Quite often a player is in the group for non-musical reasons most of the time these people have little or no talent but because they own the P.A or have a van to move the equipment or their brother has a recording studio; all of a sudden these musical light weights are directing or influencing the band's future.

Solution - Always make sure you own your equipment... when it comes to community owned equipment, forget it. It's every man or women for themselves.

This problem is compounded and more obvious when a group splits up (and they do, often) who owns what; who is liable for the equipment payments, who has the responsibility of paying the recording studio account for past recording session, CD mastering?

Once the group has disbanded no one wants anything to do with it or it's financial commitments... but someone has to pay; make sure it's not you!

Problem #5 - Buying equipment for other band members.

This is a trap, many times group members rally together to buy some piece of equipment for a band member who appears to be financially disadvantaged or who is at least lagging behind in the equipment quality department.

Solution - Never do this! If they aren't committed enough to upgrade their equipment they aren't committed enough to be in your group.

I remember back in when I was starting out how my brother and I were so keen to have our group sound good not only did we foot the bill for our own equipment and the group's PA system we also started to by good quality cymbals for our 'lame duck' drummer.

Long story short, once we finally woke up to senses and disbanded the group the drummer sold his entire drum kit (expensive cymbals and all) he quit playing music all together... it's a pity he didn't quit earlier, it would have saved us a pile of money!

Comments: There's heaps of positive musical experiences you can have in a band, it's an absolutely invaluable learning curve, there's nothing like it.

I've focused on the not so obvious traps involved in forming your own band... the common theme is "knowing when to leave".

Keep your energies focused on improving your musical abilities, after all you only have control over one person... YOU.

Look for the musical stagnation signs and head for the door. It's unrealistic to expect other people to be as dedicated or devoted to their craft as you, it's important to not sit around treading water waiting for them to catch up... it won't happen.

Now it's time to head back to the practice room and more guitar playing.

The Demise Of Rock Music - Why Did This Happen?

To everyone who believes that there has been a demise of rock music, where have you been looking? Corporate owned mainstream radio? Cardboard cutouts at dying music stores? You probably don't want to hear this, but here goes...

There are a couple of things to consider: By the time music has hit the mainstream, it has already begun it's decline. Bands that were once creative and raw and real have been polished and watered down by the troubled record companies and old school producers. How often have you seen a rock band in concert with a string ensemble behind it? Even mainstream "punk" has had huge elements of rawness and meaning torn from it to make it more marketable. The artists have no input. The music rights are now owned by the record company who think they know best. I've been there. If the record company's producer has control over the recording, your music won't be the same as you had originally wrote it. And I don't mean better.

Then there are the manufactured singers and bands conceived and created by entities such as Disney and American Idol. As I've said before, many the singers of the most influential bands throughout rock history would never have made it past the American Idol audition stage. Imagine John (Rotten) Lydon, Kurt Cobain or Black Frances of the Pixies in front of the judging panel.
I would especially like to see John's intellectual verbal abuse of the talent experts.

The singers in today's music sound pretty good, don't they? Did you know that there is software and hardware that processes the human voice so that every not coming out of the singer is actually synthesized? Every note is spot on. No more slightly sharp or flat notes or rawness which I feel gives music a human element. Sure, singers still need a good voice, and by that I mean a voice that is suited to the music, but the vocal processing equipment takes care of any imperfection, even in live performances.

Okay, okay, on to the main subject. The demise of rock. What happened? Aside from what I've described above, not much. Again I'll ask, where have you been looking? Real rock music does not exist where it used to anymore. It exists on the Internet. In the original music clubs of major cities. On the mp3 players of high school and college students. It's called independent or indie music. Music that is independent of all that is not corporate, mass produced, or manufactured.

Go to your computer, type indie rock radio or something similar into your web browser, and spend some time checking out something new. Get out and go to an original music club. One that doesn't have bands playing cover music or a DJ. Go to coffeehouses, art-spots that have music. Rock is alive and well and where it belongs. In the trenches, in the dark, dingy clubs, in your face, and in hearts and minds of listeners.

I'm not suggesting you to go there, but if you're looking for it there it is. There is no demise of rock music after all, it just doesn't live where it used to. If you don't agree, okay. If don't like it, that's fine. Pull out your vinyl, put on your giant 70's headphones and stop complaining!

Running From Shadows Or Why Where You Go There You Are

It is difficult to imagine anyone living in all the Arizona space and sun having any problems at all. Still, in Scottsdale therapists are flourishing and in Phoenix counseling is required no less than in the darker colder regions of the country. Perhaps it is the large number of retired persons who move to these warmer climates to live out their final days in golfing bliss, only to find that even though the weather is nice, and the air is dry, they are still who they were before, except now lacking in purpose and lost from their families and friends.

Perhaps it is all that sunshine that keeps a person always on the go, never able to take a quiet rainy day to be depressed on their own. Instead they have to golf and swim and play tennis and strong and tan and healthy. Where do all the darker feelings go in such obnoxiously happy weather? One could never imagine the brilliance or deep sensitivity of an artist such as Kurt Cobain living in Arizona or Florida or Hawaii. His feelings probably would have been channeled into surfing or fishing and while he may not have been as tender and musical, it's possible that instead of ending up the way he did, he might have just ended up old, with a tan.

Places like Arizona, Florida, Hawaii and most vacation spots are places where people go to forget, to start over. These are the places of dreams and our dreams do not include sadness or loss. Therapists are all about sadness and loss. Therapists are about going deep inside and who wants to go inside when it's so nice outside. Certainly, some spots in Arizona, such as Sedona are touted as spiritually uplifting, but once again, the key word here is up. This area is filled with vortexes that increase your energy, awareness and overall consciousness. Nowhere is it ever proclaimed that there is a vortex that causes you to look deeply inside at the pain you have caused yourself and others. The vortexes are just beautiful, places where you can magically heal without having to do any of that nasty internal self-examination that therapists so frequently facilitate.

The Grand Canyon is majestic and inspiring. All smallness disappears in the face of such grandeur, until we get back in our cars and have to drive in one lane of puttering traffic, and get pulled over by the Flagstaff police for going fifty-five in a thirty-five miles per hour zone and then get stuck in an ice-storm the next morning where the car spins off the side of the road because you didn't think to put snow tires on, because you were going to Arizona, where it's always sunny and you were just in Phoenix tubing down the river a few days before. The point is, that no matter where we go or what we do, in the end the journey leads us back to ourselves and sometimes, if we are lost, it's okay to get a little help, even if you do live in Arizona.

Brett Favre's Consecutive Start Streak - Putting It In Perspective

Brett Favre is inarguably one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. In addition to holding nearly every passing record there is, he also has a Superbowl win under his belt, and he has won 3 league MVP awards.

But perhaps his most impressive accomplishment is his consecutive start record.

Brett Favre began his consecutive start streak in 1992 and kept it alive for 16 seasons, all the way up to his retirement announcement on March 4, 2008. He started in 253 consecutive regular season games. If you count the post season, then he started 275 consecutive games.

As of November 2006, the other NFL teams started 374 quarterbacks in the same time period that the Packers started 1. Chicago started 20 quarterbacks by itself in that same time period.

Favre's streak is quite an impressive record, no doubt. But, have you ever really stopped to think about it? Let me help put it in perspective.

Favre started his consecutive start streak on September 27, 1992.

In 1992:

Tony Romo was 12 years old, Eli Manning was 11 years old, and Ben Roethlisberger was 10 years old. Aaron Rodgers was an 8 year old kid growing up in Chico, California.

Donald Driver, Chad Clifton, and Mark Tauscher were already playing football - IN HIGH SCHOOL, that is.

CDs surpassed cassette tapes as the preferred medium for recorded music.

Rock Stars Who Walk on the Tame Side

I'm glad I was never a British fan of Iggy Pop. I would be pitched into depression every time I saw The Stooges former wild man of punk tout car insurance in the current Swiftcover TV ad campaign. Somehow it doesn't seem to matter that Johnny Rotten plugs Country Life butter; there was always something vaudeville about him. But it's time to put your shirt back on, Iggy.

Nowadays every rapper drips bling, while each female singer is dressed in haute couture. But when I was young, my contemporaries and I shared this fantasy that the music we loved wasn't part of a money making industry like any other business enterprise. It was part of the youth revolution, man. Ah, the innocence of youth.

The music may well have always come first but once a musician's career was under way there were ex-wives to feed, managers to be exploited by, and record companies to placate ahead of the next album.

It was acceptable if your favourite artist or group lived life lavishly on the wild side throwing money at fast cars, motorcycles, and supermodels.

It was even OK for Eric Clapton to wear Armani -- bluesmen always dressed nicely. But his gypsy drummer in Cream, Ginger Baker was a big horse polo fan. Alice Cooper was crazy about golf. This seemed almost as incongruous as George Harrison's fascination with motor racing and Mick Jagger's passion for cricket.

Anything Bob Dylan did, say, in finding country and western or religion was fine because, well, he was Dylan. Life-long fans, though, had to take a deep breath when he appeared in a Victoria's Secret commercial.

David Bowie acquitted himself when the Ziggy Stardust star sang Little Drummer Boy with Bing Crosby. He didn't embarrass fans with his film work either unlike both Dylan and Jagger.

You can take authenticity, however, too far in pursuit of the rock and roll lifestyle. The members of the 27 Club -- Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, and Kurt Cobain -- might now be selling car insurance if they had lived to see 28 and beyond.

I'm sure family and fans alike pray they had. So I take it back. It's easy money, go for it Iggy, you've earned the gig.

This amazing 3 piece band that was part of the Seattle "grunge" era have put together some great songs that have become classics in a short period of time.

When Nirvana were first starting to make a name for themselves in the early 90's, songs at that time were filled with fancy guitar solos that were played at super sonic speeds.

Tears and Tragedy - The Biggest Figures of the 20th Century to Take the Fatal Plunge

When a person takes his or her own life, it is one of the most tragic things in the world. And when it's a celebrity that everyone looks up to, it becomes even more confusing and difficult to comprehend. When these people who you think have it all suddenly commit something so out of the ordinary, it gives us ordinary people a lot more reason for reflection. In the end it's true that a lot of the world's best and brightest human beings just leave us too soon.

From famous musicians, artists, thespians to political figures, it's a wonder why so many of these talented people took that fateful plunge. It makes us ruminate on what they saw in those dark, final days, what they felt and what caused them to lose all hope of redemption in this world. It give us a glimpse into everything that's good in humanity and how sometimes all of the bad in the world can swallow it. Here are a few good examples:

* Kurt Cobain: The great pioneer of grunge and a genuinely miserable man called Kurt Cobain ended it all with a shotgun in 1994. He had once claimed to have suicide genes in his body, based on all the family members he had who already passed away from such a fate. And on April 5th of that year, he unfortunately justified this claim. His lyrics and music stand as testimony to his troubled soul... who was heard by all but sadly listened to by nobody.

* Sylvia Plath: The poet and academic who lived a hard life from which literary works like 'Daddy' and 'The Bell Jar' stand as proof, went into the darkness with a little help from an oven and some gas. It was a hard life for Plath, who in spite of academic success and an astounding literary precociousness had to deal with a broken marriage and her own personal fragility.

* Adolf Hitler: Though not exactly beloved of many, Adolf Hitler is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in recent history and one that also fell by taking his own life. Before he could be put to justice, he put himself to rest with the help of both a gun and a cyanide tablet, as the Russian Red Army charged across Nazi Germany.

* Jonathan Brandis: American film and television star Jonathan Brandis sadly used a nylon rope to hang himself after a night out with friends. They all tried reviving him but to no avail.

There seems to be a gap in the musical industry at this time. It seems that only the most extremes of music have survived this very fickle industry.
For example, if you turn the radio on, what you'll hear are extremes and styles of music. On one station you'll hear just talk. On another station you'll hear rapping, with words of violent underscores. On another station you'll hear classical music. On another station you'll hear someone singing about whiskey and forgetting their pain. On yet another station you'll hear what's left of what we used to call, "pop music."

The change in pop music, and what may be lacking, is what I would like to address at this time. It seems there used to be a larger variety of pop music available when listening to pop music stations. However, at this time it has decreased to a narrow amount where one singer sounds like much like the last singer. There is not many songs available to hear of Celine Dion. One's singer that has managed to stay on top consistently is Christina Aguilera.

One could not argue with the fact that twenty years ago popular music was much different than today. And I'm not sure it could be argued that it is getting better all the time. Just about ten years ago Elton John had hit songs from the movie The Lion King, Celine Dion had a hit song from the movie Titanic.

The eighties and nineties had many hit songs from movies, including CaddyShack, Officer and a Gentleman, Dirty Dancing, Good Morning Vietnam, Moonstruck, and La Bamba. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that there are not many hit songs or hit song soundtracks from popular movies these days. Hollywood has attempted to do this but has not reached the peak it once achieved.

Going back farther in time, one could trace pop music back to the roots of rock-and-roll itself. Elvis Presley carved out a whole new trend in music. The Beatles followed with great songs and performances that changed the music world. The Beatles seemed to go through several stages and reflected it in their music.

When the Beatles first came to America, they recorded songs of love with lollipop lyrics. Following this, they let their hair grow out, and recorded music with more convoluted meaning, which seemed to question the rulers and authority of the times. When the Beatles finally broke up, brand-new music trends evolved with the music of Paul McCartney and Wings, and John Lennon's solo work.

Elvis started out as the Hillbilly Cat, recording for Sun Records. His Southern drawl was very prominent and his hair was a dirty blond color. Then he entered into the era where he died his hair black, completed a stint in the Army and had a whole new career in movies. This was the "movie Elvis." Then, Elvis entered into his musical comeback phase. He recorded music and performed live in Las Vegas during this time. The final stage was his jump suit stage, sometimes called the last days of Elvis Presley. This was the time during which, although he still sounded good vocally, he appeared overweight and bloated.

Let's change styles right now in music and turn to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were part of the Rat Pack. They performed in Las Vegas, recorded records, and made several movies. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra certainly reflected unique talent, good voices, and wonderful music that we have to enjoy.

However, who is the next big talent we follow with a fine-tooth comb, from beginning to end? Who is the next Elvis Presley, Beatles, Dean Martin, or Frank Sinatra?

There is certainly a gap in popular music today. Sure, you can find many popular artists with popular songs. However, they all lack that certain uniqueness in caliber of performers of days passed. Maybe it's a lack of charisma. Maybe it's the lack of mystery. I don't know.

However, shows like American Idol are certainly trying to recapture that with what they are doing. American Idol is trying to discover talent that could be turned into another Elvis Presley or someone who will change music and be remembered forever.

Although they have discovered many unique and great talents, if you ask Simon Cowell or Randy Jackson, I believe they would tell you they have not found talent that has achieved what they originally intended.

Yes, they have found great talent. The talent they have discovered certainly lacks nothing on the vocal side of things. However, perhaps it is something in the personality of the performer that's missing that has not launched them to the status of Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Dean Martin, Jim Morrison, or Kurt Cobain.

Perhaps it is something these legendary artists possessed that was mysterious and unknown to us. There is definitely something missing. American Idol, along with many other music labels, are certainly still looking for someone to turn the music industry upside down.

I don't know, perhaps that won't ever happen again.

Perhaps the performers that managed to change music forever, like Elvis, the Beatles, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, are of our history and days past. I hope not.

Who was the best alternative rock band from the 1990s? Isn't it amazing that the 1990s were just about two decades ago? It seems like they were just yesterday, but time obviously flies. Now that we have a full decade sandwiched in between, it's easy to be a bit more retrospective about the 1990s. Let's look at the alternative rock scene to see who the best 1990s alternative rock band was. Here are a few contenders.

The first one we'll look at is Nirvana. Kurt Cobain and crew were said to have spearheaded the whole alternative revolution, as their roots were in Seattle and they were huge in the music scene there. Nirvana achieved huge levels of success nationwide, but Kurt Cobain's tragic suicide ended up cutting the band short of its full potential.

Then, there's Pearl Jam. Also from Seattle, their hits were arguably just as big, if not bigger. Eddie Vedder and crew produced some phenomenal music through most of the decade, and they're still going strong today. Some would argue that Pearl Jam was the most consistent through the 1990s.

Others might say that Weezer was their favorite. A different breed of alternative rock, these catchy, poppy tunes were much akin to the indie music that's popular today. Rivers Cuomo and crew were wildly successful during the 1990s.

Then, of course, there was Radiohead. Still just as big today as they've ever been, The Bends and OK Computer were both enormous hits in the music world and made huge impacts.

How To Increase Your Child's Self Esteem

Have you ever wondered why so many people, who seemingly have everything, end up killing themselves? Elvis Presley, Marlin Monroe, Kurt Cobain and so many more 'superstars' who have all the money and fame in the world. They seem to have all the 'reasons' to be incredibly happy, but they end up choosing to end their own lives and most often turn to drugs to feel some sense of happiness. The answer lies in self esteem. Having a high esteem for yourself means that YOU value YOURSELF. This is not only the key to true happiness, but also the key to living a full and prosperous life. As a parent you can really do much more than you think to increase your child's self esteem.

The real question for you as a parent is 'what do you really want for your child?' Do you want them to be, do and have all those things that you never had or accomplished? So many parents live their own shortcomings and unfulfilled desires through their children and in the process they strip their children of the ultimate privilege which is to live and actualize their own wants and needs. It's important to realize that your job as a parent is that of a guide and not that of a boss. The lowest level of leadership is that of dictatorship - if you enforce certain actions they are usually followed with a sense of resentment and as long as your children feel like they have to satisfy someone else, they will never grow in themselves and never have high self esteem.

Self esteem comes from within. No one can give it to you. It is a feeling within yourself that makes you feel worthy, important and significant. We all have to have that - we all have to feel significant in some way and whether you meet this need in positive or negative ways, you will meet it. If you want to increase your child's self esteem you need to seek ways of helping the feel significant in positive and empowering ways. Being the best in class can make a child feel just as significant as popping pills will. The only difference is in the way the need is met. Your job as a parent is to never push, but to guide and encourage your child to meet the need of significance in ways that will empower them and lay a strong foundation for their future.

With all the studies in self image psychology, one of the most significant findings was that all your personal performance can be directly related to your self image. Your self image is nothing but the way you 'see' yourself and self esteem is nothing but the way you see and feel about yourself. This is everything in life. As long as you believe you don't deserve something you won't. As long as you believe you can't, then you won't. As long as you believe you are fat, you won't loose weight.

So what can you do as a parent to increase your child's self esteem? Realize that high self esteem comes from making yourself do difficult things. That feeling of pride in doing something that was hard and something that you thought you could not do, will give you an inner sense of accomplishment, self worth and belief in your latent abilities that raises your self esteem. Self esteem is universal and will encourage and enable your child to do and attempt other things that previously seemed impossible for them. Your role as a parent, to increase your child's self esteem, is similar to that of a good coach. You are there to support and encourage your child, but never to push them too far. If you push them too hard you will raise your self esteem when they succeed and not theirs. Self esteem is an internal game and you have to encourage it within your child to make the decisions and to take the actions for him or herself.

You can help to increase your child's self esteem by simply helping them to see the magnificence that is already within them. Teach your children to develop and have controls from within. Teach them that no one can make them feel bad about themselves without their consent and that other people's opinions of them are none of their business. The key to high self esteem is to become inner directive and to learn how to listen to and trust in your own internal guide which is that unique perfection that is within each and every one of us.

As a parent you must lead by example. You can not expect your children to have high self esteem if you don't. Value yourself and take care of yourself on all levels - emotionally, spiritually and physically. This is the simplest way that you can start to increase your child's self esteem and when your children see how much you love and value yourself, they will soon follow. Not because they have to, but because they want to. Never try and raise your own self esteem through your children, their achievements and their accomplishments. This will break them down underneath the surface and until and unless they do and achieve their own successes, regardless of how small it might seem, they will never experience the bliss of self love and high self esteem.

When Plaid Shorts Became Cool

Walking around Manhattan, you will see plaid shorts, hats, shoes, bags on girls, guys, kids, in mainstream department stores and in advertising. You wouldn't think so, but plaid didn't always used to be so cool. The evolution of this pattern is in fact one of great interest to those in the fashion industry. Here I will trace its history to today, where it has become a fashion statement.

The word "plaid" itself refers to a patterned wool cloth. Some believe the word comes from Gaellic or a Scots language. When you say "full plaid" it refers to the long skirts (not kilts) that are part of the traditional highland dress uniform, usually worn exclusively by pipe bands. Then comes the kilt - probably the most well-known and internationally recognized piece of plaid clothing. The Scottish kilt, the better known kilt type, dates back to the 16th Century. Each kilt design was meant to designate a separate clan or family for the Scottish. They are worn at the natural waist, just below the lowest rib. Underwear with a plaid kilt is completely optional.

Then came Kurt Cobain. Okay, maybe not that quick, but a few hundred years after plaid came about, Midwesterners began wearing flannel. Flannel is made with wool or cotton yarn, loosely spun, similar to a type of fabric originating in Wales. It is worn still today by those who work in cold climates: lumberjacks, farmers, construction workers, etc. Flannel, that has a very similar design to plaid, was not exactly seen as cool. But during the grunge movement of the early 90's, Nirvana headman Kurt Cobain made flannel - and the plaid design - cool again (at least for a certain part of the American populous). He would wear it to concerts, in videos, and for photo shoots and made it something that was acceptable for the young people who listened to his music and were part of the movement. His widow, Courtney Love recently announced that she was going to auction away his flannel shirts at a Christie's auction.

Following Cobain's lead came TuPac and West Coast gangster rap. The rapper would often wear a white tank top with a flannel shirt over it. Of course, the shirt was a bit oversized and usually would go down to the knees. These two stars of the music world are a major reason why it is okay to wear plaid shorts today in the streets of New York.

Plaid shorts came about in the mainstream stores in fall of 2007. As the summer season was coming to and end, some fashion houses brought out plaid shorts for their resort collection, making them the must-have item of the following spring/summer. Today, plaid shorts are found nearly everywhere that fashionable people shop. As the trend has evolved, plaid shorts are becoming less cool, and other plaid accessories have become the new, hot item.

A Short Biography of Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain: 25 years apart and from the same part of the world. Different deaths, but related nonetheless. There must be something about the North East of the USA, but at least it gave us two brilliant performers, although there is no doubt in most people's mind who was the true genius of the two.

However, this is about the greater of the two, and Cobain's name was mentioned only to express wonder about how this part of the USA should produce two great personalities that died before their time, and perhaps while their horizons were, in their own eyes only, on the wane.

Johnny Allen Hendrix, was born in Seattle on 27th November, 1942, and had his name changed by his father on returning from the war to James Marshall Hendrix after James's uncle Leon Marshall Hendrix. His childhood was an unstable and deprived one, and he both suffered neglect and lived in welfare care for a while. Jimi practiced guitar on an unstringed broomstick and a one stringed ukulele, and although he paid $5 for his first acoustic guitar his first real guitar was a white Supro Ozark that his father bought him when he realized his son was serious about learning guitar.

He had no amp, but that did not deter him. He learned by watching others and listening to records, and was initially influenced by his father's Muddy Waters and BB King records so unsurprisingly stared his guitar playing life with the blues. He was a totally extrovert player, and his showing off with electrifying guitar playing actually upset a lot of people, and got him fired from his first band.

From there on he went from band to band, and after serving as a paratrooper in the army, he worked as a session guitarist backing such rock legends as Little Richard, the Isley Brothers and Sam Cooke. It was after he allowed Chas Chandler, formerly of the Animals, to be his manager that his career kicked off big style. Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) girl friend, Linda Keith, had told Chas about Jimi's electrifying playing, and he was persuaded to go to London UK. That was when Chas Chandler changed s name to Jimi, and formed the band the Jimi Hendrix Experience with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding.

London was the ideal place at time for an up and coming pop star of Jimi's type, and the band blasted the charts with its first single 'Hey Joe'. After following The Who at that fabulous pop festival at Monterey (were you there?) in 1967 and sent the crowd wild by trashing his guitar with fire on stage the band released their first album "Are You Experienced" and Jimi was a star.

The Experience's most successful album. 'Electric Ladyland' was released in 1968 after Chas Chandler left as manager, and his leaving was the beginning of the end. Drugs and hangers-on crowding the studios led eventually to the end of the band and Jimi formed another band he Gypsies, Sun and Rainbows for a short time: their only gig was Woodstock, 1969, where his version of 'The Star Spangled Banner' was electrifying, but also his last great public performance.

Drugs were catching up, and his last album was "Cry of Love" also featured Billy Cox of gypsies, and Mitch Mitchell who had been with Jimi since the Experience days. On 17th September 1970, he took some sleeping pills belonging to his girlfriend, Monica Denneman. He had an apparent allergic reaction to them, and threw up sometime during the night and drowned on his vomit. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead. An inauspicious end to a great musician at the age of 27.

Jimi Hendrix was known for his electrifying solos work, and his use of his teeth and playing behind his back. These have been described as gimmicks, and perhaps they were, but they were gimmicks that nobody else had thought of using live and on TV. He has yet to be emulated and everybody knows of Jimi Hendrix.

His use of designed feedback was pioneering and his branded trademark. Nobody sounded like him, and nobody has done since. You know it's Jimi playing from the that first unique note.

Those of us fortunate enough to see him play live will never forget his dynamic personality and superb guitar skills, and his name and work will live forever. On that day in September 1970 a true genius was lost and the music world was the worse for it.

Jimi Hendrix may not have been the best pure guitarist, even in his own time, but no one has yet approached him in his personality, dynamism and on-stage presence and it is doubtful now if anybody ever will.

A Quick and Handy Guide to 1990's Music

Some of the most innovative, original and inventive music has come about in the recent past. The 1990's were an era of musical experimentation, and many of those experiments worked well and changed the music scene for today. However, much like with any musicians in the modern era, these pioneers of the 1990s were influenced by sitting on a piano stool or piano bench cushions. Yes, nearly all musicians are influenced by classical music. The 1990s was the start of the grunge trend and brought in a new era for punk music in which punk attitude, lifestyle and music went mainstream for the first time. Lastly, the 1990s were an important era for rap music, and essentially when rap was brought to the fore as a mainstream and universally accepted genre.

As mentioned previously, grunge was a big music genre at the start of the decade. Some of the most famous bands from that time period were classified as grunge when they first came out. Kurt Cobain and his band Nirvana started this trend. Later they were followed by other bands such as Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins. According to music experts, grunge is characterized by heavy fuzz used as a sound effect and lots of distortion of the guitars sound. Also, there is a certain style associated with grunge that generally includes flannel shirts and a typically deadpan stage presence, devoid of the theatrics of the hair bands of the 1980s such as Van Halen and Kiss.

Punk rock also became popular again in the last decade of the twentieth century and a band from Berkeley, California called Green Day were at the front of that trend. Green Day are typically attributed with helping along the movement of a subset of punk music called pop punk. Pop punk is a very apt title because the style combines the lyrics and rhythm of pop music with the guitar and general tough attitude of punk music. Other pop punk bands that were popular in the 1990s were Blink 182 and The Offspring, each with their own specific style within the genre of pop punk.

Rap was also an important part of the 1990s music revolution. Rap was a young genre at the time and there were not many established rappers that most of the country would be able to recognize. However, that all changed in the nineties. Tupac and Notorious BIG started a rivalry in rap music that would turn into an all out war between the East and West coasts with the casualties being the rappers themselves. Nobody really knows how the fighting started but the two rap moguls began taunting each other, with each rap basically daring the other to do them one better. The rivalry caught the attention of the country and after a while even most of suburban America had chosen a side in the east coast versus west coast scuffle.

Despite what some critics may say, the 1990s were one of the most important and revolutionary eras in modern music. The last part of the last century paved the way for music of this century.

If Kurt Cobain Were Still Alive, How Would His Music Have Evolved Over the Past 15 Years?

15 years ago, Kurt Cobain blew his brains out with a shotgun. He was strung out on heroin, and had just skipped out on rehab. It's quite possible that he would have continued his musical career if not for these unfortunate circumstances. Had he, it is conceivable that he could have become a profound musical great. Most notably would have been his commercial success, accessibility to the disenfranchised masses, and even more than annoying clone-like fashion trends proliferated through all class levels worldwide. His intentions may have been genuine, but they would have been awash amidst the vast myriad of advertising slogans generated by his profitability. It's a real shame, but he probably did the right thing by offing himself. It kept him seeming genuine.

Having little, if any say in the production of their music, Nirvana, displeased with the production work of musical genius, Steve Albini, attempted to object to the recording of their last album, in a feeble attempt to grasp control of their lives that were rapidly spinning out of control. The problem wasn't becoming too famous too fast, it wasn't chemical imbalance or depression, and it wasn't even just the advertising executives. The problem was complex, disingenuous, and insidious. The hollow gnawing at Kurt's soul drove him to madness. It was the great artist's struggle. One's harshest critic is always one's own self.

Flash forward, to now. If Kurt Cobain were still around, to find his music all one would have to do is type music download iPod or something similar into Google, and all of his albums would show up. His new solo project would headline Burning Man, or Coachella, and you wouldn't go an hour on MTV without seeing him pop up somewhere. His music would probably have gone through several evolutionary stages, he would have changed his singing voice, written books, and perhaps cameoed in a few movies. He would have disappeared for a few years, and there would have been rumors of Kurt spottings. The divorce would have been very traumatic on him, but he would have found someone else a year later or so. He would have channeled that into his writing, and eventually the alienated, misanthropic tone to his lyrics would have softened. 15 years would have shaped him into a mature, and while still mainstream, prolific songwriter. It's impossible to say whether his music 15 years later would have been good or bad definitively, but it is quite easy to say with inadmissible accuracy that it would be different.

He would have lost fans, gained new ones, and perhaps even faded into obscurity - though the latter is less likely. Either way, it would have been interesting to see the evolution of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, and the music they made that millions of people still adore to this day. The opportunity to turn Kurt Cobain into a shame would have been a welcome one, if for no other reason than he would have at least made a few new songs.

There has been such a revolutionary change for male cardigans. You can use them to pair with your formal dress or you can go casual with a cross checked and striped cardigan. 2008 is the time to stock up on cardigans.
